He Went In My Place

When

When I was ordered to Viet Nam, my wife was hospitalized and seriously ill. My assignment was put on hold and I was given a temporary deferment. I was never sent to Viet Nam but in 1970 sent to Germany instead. I have always felt that Ken died in my place. I think of him daily and remember him in prayer. I would like to visit his burial site in the near future..

Remembering An American Hero

Dear SP4 Kenneth Wayne Shamblin, sir

As an American, I would like to thank you for your service and for your sacrifice made on behalf of our wonderful country. The youth of today could gain much by learning of heroes such as yourself, men and women whose courage and heart can never be questioned.

May God allow you to read this, and may He allow me to someday shake your hand when I get to Heaven to personally thank you. May he also allow my father to find you and shake your hand now to say thank you; for America, and for those who love you.

With respect, and the best salute a civilian can muster for you, Sir

Curt Carter

Thoughts from an old friend.

Kenny was a lifelong friend from elementry school onward through Sr High. He played all the sports well and got along with everyone. I never knew him to get into a fight with anyone. He loved the outdoors and his family. I kept thoughts of him throughout my military career. It wasn't until just a few years ago I ran across a "Declassified" report that stated he died during the attempted rescue of a MACVSOG team in Cambodia. Even today I miss his frienship and he will always be young in my memories. Go with God my brother.
