Final Mission of BM1 Louis C. Schlote
BM1 Louis C. Schlote was a Boatswain’s Mate assigned to U.S. Navy Forces, Vietnam, River Squadron 5 (RIVRON-5), River Division 51 (RIVDIV 51). On March 23, 1968, BM1 Schlote’s boat was ambushed in a firefight by hidden enemy on an island on the Hau Giang (Bassac) River, 5½ miles Southeast of Binh Thuy. Schlote suffered shrapnel wounds by a rocket in his left hip and both legs. He was medevacked to the 3rd Field Hospital in Saigon for treatment. Schlote succumbed to his injuries on April 16, 1968.
