My uncle, my hero
We never met, sadly you were taken from this world before I was even born, but I think about you quite often. I'm so proud of you, so proud to be your niece. Your memory will live on through me and my own children and we will make sure you are never forgotten. I look forward to the day we do finally meet so I can thank you in person.
Here's a poem I wrote on Memroial Day 2001 as I thought of you and all the others who gave the ultimate sacrifice. May you all rest in peace now.
~*~*~
Sacrifices
Foreign soils christened with the blood
of American soldiers. Beloved family
members lost in far away lands.
With much honor and bravery, they
leave wives, husbands, children
and parents behind, knowing
they may never see them again.
Sacrifices...
for freedom and the country they love.
The fortunate ones return to us fully,
others come back no longer whole
in mind or body, or both.
And still others are with us
in memories blurred by time and tears.
To all of you who have given of
yourselves freely and unselfishly...
I thank you.
