Richard Sands was a tall sandy haired assist gunner for Larry Darnell. He was hit by a .50/.51 Cal round that came up thru the floor of the Chinook. The "Boxcar" CH-47 was approx 1500 feet above the Kham Duc SF that was being evacuated due to overwheming enemy forces. It was the second Chinook shot down that Mothers Day 1968,but Pfc Sands was the only Casualty on that a/c due to superior piloting.
The a/c was able to make it back to runway but was on fire and his body was unable to be recovered altho 3 "A" Co. men attempted to bring him out. We rememeber him at each Reunion... and everyday in between.

Not Forgotten

I have not forgotten you. I chair the Adoption Committee for The National League of Families of Prisoners of War and Missing in Action in Southeast Asia. We will always remember the 1,889 Americans still unaccounted for in Southeast Asia and the thousands of others that lost their lives. We will not stop our efforts until all of you are home where you belong.

We need to reach the next generation so that they will carry on when our generation is no longer able. To do so, we are attempting to locate photographs of all the missing. If you are reading this remembrance and have a photo and/or memory of this missing American that you would like to share for our project, please contact me at:

My Friend

I was a member of the 3rd platoon, Company A, 1/46th, 198th LIB from 1/68 to 1/69. I knew Rich the day he arrived, and unfortunately I still remember the day he left. He was a good friend, and I still miss him.
