Remembrance
I did't know Don well. I joined the Recon Platoon only days prior to our firefight with the Viet Cong. The platoon sargent had assigned me to be Don's assistant gunner as Don was carrying our M-60.
We were moving through the jungle when the point squad encountered the Viet Cong position of fortified bunkers. As the fight continued, Don and the medic jumped into an abandoned bunker where Doc could treat our increasing wounded. Suddenly there was a tremendous explosion that made the jungle floor shake. Don was hit by shrapnel and died instantly.
If there is any consolation to giving the ultimate sacrifice it is that Don did not suffer.
I've lived with the memory of Don's loss and that of all our brothers and pray for there souls. I now pray that in some infinitesimal way my post provides a bit of closure for Don's family and loved ones.

Donald Sanders was married to my mom Joyce L. Kurrasch
I have found items of Donny's that I would like to return back to the Sanders family. I believe they belong to the Sanders family and I would be honored to return them along with letting them know that he has not been forgotten.
