Sharing time with PFC Samson
I was Samson’ s platoon commander, 1st platoon, when he joined H co. He was my radio operator. One night we were on radio watch and we began talking. We both grew up doing field work in the California farms.. My close friend’s mother owned a Filipino restaurant so we talked about the food, the adobo and puncette, and Lumpia. It was a warm starry night, we talked like friends with common interests instead of an officer and enlisted. Soon after that I was transferred to battalion S3. When I heard that SSgt McRee, who had replaced as platoon commander and Samson were killed by a booby trap. That could have been my fate if I had stayed with 1st platoon. Some times on a warm starry night I think of our conversation and wonder what he could have accomplished if he had lived.
