If I should die...remembrances for COL. Donald Myrick RUSSELL, USAF, who slipped the surly bonds of Earth...and danced the skies on laughter-silvered WINGS!!! LIFT UP YOUR FACE TO GOD!!...OH, MEN WHO FLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
If I should die, and leave you here awhile, be not like others, sore undone, who keep long vigils by the silent dust, and weep...for MY sake, turn again to life, and smile...Nerving thy heart and trembling hand to do something to comfort other hearts than thine...Complete these dear, unfinished tasks of mine...and I, perchance, may therein comfort you.

With Pride, Sorrow, and Remembrance
My name is Tim Humphrey. I knew Don Russell when I was just a kid. His stature and presence made a significant impression on this country boy from Gray, Maine. He was a hero to me then and still is to this day. I'm only sorry
I didn't get to know him when I became an adult. It's good to know that there
are still heroes who will stand up in the face of enemies real or imagined and
protect me and my family like Don was willing to do. I wish he didn't have to pay the ultimate sacrifice, because he had so much more to offer this world.
Don will long live in the hearts and minds of all the Humphrey family because of his valor and strength of character. The most important reason we think so
fondly of him is that he was a kind man who loved his family very much. God
bless all of his family and friends. May we never forget the Wall.
Sincerely,
Your cousin

Song from your son
On 2/10/73 I wrote a song with the following words remembering my father...Donald Lee Russell
My brother was a boy of three the day my father left
His father kissed him on the cheek and tears drops filled my eyes
For when his father walked away my brother knew not why
He didn't know he had to go, he had to go to war
My brother fast approaching four, was soundly sleeping when
The doorbell echoed bringing news
News so hard to bare
It seemed unreal for me to hear my father's plane was down
They knew not if he could be safe or if he might be gone
My brother after passing five looked up to the sky
He wondered if he'd ever see his father home again
Mother tucked him into bed and this is what he said
Will you tell me if you know
Is my father dead
My brother now is almost nine yet he does not know
If his father will return
Or ever be seen again
Yet the saddest part remains
He can't recall the day
His father kissed him on the cheek
Saying son be good.
That was written twenty-six years ago, and still as much as I miss my father, I'm sadder still that my "little" brother never knew him.
