Do Not Stand at my Grave and Weep

Do not stand at my grave and weep
I am not there; I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow,
I am the diamond glints on snow,
I am the sun on ripened grain,
I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you awaken in the morning's hush
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the soft stars that shine at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry,
I am not there; I did not die

Ground Casualty

SP5 Anthony M. Blas was a Financial Specialist serving with the 101st Administration Company, 101st Airborne Division. On March 12, 1970, SP5 Blas was fatally wounded while watching a movie in an outdoor theatre at Phu Bai Complex in Thua Thien Province, RVN. There are two accounts for this incident: First account – I served with Tony Blas in the 101st Admin Company. We were stationed at Phu Bai near Hue. We were sitting in our outdoor theater watching a movie when a shot was fired. When we realized it wasn't part of the movie soundtrack, we turned on the lights. Tony had been shot in the back by someone. It wasn't enemy fire. We never found out who or why. (Info from Dave Ritchie); Second account - At the time, I was a young PFC processing through Camp Campbell from one 101st (Airborne Division) unit to another. There had been a floor show with a band and then we were about half-way through watching a movie, “The Battle of Britain” as I recall. I was sitting about six feet to his left when he was killed. I wrote in my diary that “a finance clerk was shot in the back with a .45 caliber pistol and died a few minutes later”, and the next day “no one allowed out of camp, and all .45 pistols confiscated.” On the third day my orders came through and I left. I never heard anything more about it, but I never forgot it either.
