Ground Casualty

The Strategic Communications Command Signal Brigade was first organized on April 1, 1966, in Saigon, RVN. Redesignated the 1st Signal Brigade, it was responsible for providing communications to Vietnam’s 60,000 square miles of coastal, jungle, and mountain terrain. With approximately 12,000 personnel in early 1966, the 1st Signal Brigade would grow to one of the largest brigade-sized units to serve in country. SSG Leroy Reid Jr. was a radio teletype operator serving with the 160th Signal Group. The 160th provided headquarters support in the capital of Saigon and at the massive Long Binh Post complex in Bien Hoa Province, RVN. On the late afternoon of August 15, 1971, Reid was a passenger on a motorcycle that was involved in an accident with a five-ton truck near Long Binh. Reportedly, the truck was making a turn when the collision occurred. Reid was admitted to the nearby 24th Evacuation Hospital where doctors treated him for a lacerated liver with hematoma. Despite the best efforts of medical staff at saving his life, he expired shortly after. An Army veteran with eight years of service, Reid was 29 years old. He was survived by his wife, Mrs. Ailla M. Reid of Lawton, OK, and his father, Mr. Leroy Reid Sr. of St. Petersburg, FL. [Sourced at coffeltdatabase.org]
