The Best Bulldog of Them All

Hey, Big Ed!

Well, it’s taken me a few years to find a way to say “Thank you” but today I discovered “The Virtual Wall” on the internet, and its Remembrances section.

I’m sure you know how your death affected us all on that awful day in 1966 when we got the word. Some of us were still at dear ole Clyde High, others were away at college, and still others of us were trying to make our way in the working world. But wherever we were on that September day, those of us who knew and loved you felt like we had been kicked in the gut by an Albany running back.

You were such a great brother, literally, to all of the Ramos boys, and figuratively, to all the rest of us. And while there have been many good football players at Clyde, you were one of the best. I still remember how you would tear someone’s head off on the practice field then flash that mile-wide smile of yours at them when you helped them up. And come game time, the other team had better have focused on blocking Edward Ramos or it was going to be a long Friday night for them.

But off the field, you never caused anyone any trouble. You were a friend to all. And what a sense of humor! When you would say something funny or clever, and then say that little, “Daaaahh …” after it, we would all roar with laughter!

I guess I’m just trying to say that you were a good guy all the way around, Big Ed. When I visited The Wall in the mid-nineties, I asked one of the guides if he could help me find your name. I guess since you were always bigger than life to most of us that knew you, I half expected him to say, “Edward Ramos? Why, sure, he’s right over here.” But he had to check his book, and then he directed me over to a spot on The Wall where … sure enough … when I looked down, I found your name. And suddenly, it was like that damn Albany running back all over again! I felt such a jab to my ribs that I thought I was going to have to sit down on the sidewalk. But I didn’t, so I took my piece of paper and made a rubbing of your name. And the next time I saw your nephew and namesake, Edward -- now my nephew by marriage -- I proudly presented it to him. It was a great day for both of us.

So take care of yourself up there, and thank you for sacrificing so much for all the rest of us still here. As usual, you gave everything you had for the benefit of someone else.

We love you, Big Ed!

Brothers of Friends

Edward,

I grew-up in your home town of Clyde, Tx. Your Youngest brother, Tommy, was one my best buddy's in school. In the summer before my senior year in High school, the summer of 1981, I was fortunate enough to take a trip to Washington D.C. I knew I would see the wall and for my friend and your brother I found your name and said a prayer for you. Thank you for your sacrifice. Your valor will never be forgotten. Your family will always remember and love you.

Texas' Best

Edward, I never met you. I am also a Texan and a veteran. I saw your name today, the anniversary of your death at a too young 20. I just want you and those who love you to know that the sacrifice you made is not unnoticed. Dios te tenga en paz, Edward, y le pido que descansas en la luz de su gloria.
