I remember Alfie
It was the first day of Glee Club Class and I sat next to a girl that would become my best friend for the next three years. Sherry was crazy about this guy Alfie.
Alfie was what you would call a tall cold drink of water. He was a head taller than anyone else in our high school group, thin, and the longest legs I have ever seen. He could walk the slowest of anyone I had ever seen. A group of us would usually head downtown after school before breaking apart to head to our homes. It was normaly a ten minute walk downtown but walking with Alfie it could take over an hour.
I don't remember ever seeing him in a hurry or really ever worried about much. Maybe he knew his time with us was short and he just savored the life he had.
Sherry and Alfie did the high school dance thing; going together for awhile, breaking up, making up, breaking up, trying to make up, finally drifting apart.
I heard about Alfie on one of my visits home. It tore at my heart to know that this was now a world with one less Alfie in it.
