Thank You

Dear LTC Jerry Pyle, Thank you for your service as a Tactical Aircraft Pilot. Saying thank you isn't enough, but it is from the heart. It is Independence Day Weekend. Time passes quickly. Please watch over America, it stills needs your strength, courage and faithfulness, especially now. Rest in peace with the angels.

Final Mission of LTC Jerry W. Pyle

LTC Jerry W. Pyle was a U.S. Air Force pilot serving with the 20th Tactical Air Support Squadron, 504th Tactical Air Support Group, 7th Air Force. On May 11, 1970, LTC Pyle was on a visual reconnaissance mission in a USAF Cessna O-2A Skymaster (#67-21341) approximately three miles from Hieu Nhon in Quang Nam Province, RVN, when he reported to U.S. Marine Combined Action Program (CAP) units in the area that he had spotted a camouflaged bunker. After receiving the coordinates of the bunker, a CAP 2-4-2 patrol was dispatched to investigate. The patrol fired on the bunker, killing one Viet Cong in the bunker and another attempting to flee. LTC Pyle remained on station while the patrol swept the area. During this time, Pyle noticed four VC attempting to outflank the CAP 2-4-2 patrol and dived to engage them. The four VC opened fire with automatic weapons on the aircraft which took an unknown number of hits, crashed and burned. The four VC then fled in an unknown direction. The CAP 2-4-2 patrol requested a reaction force of CAP Marines and river patrol boats from the 1st Coastal Zone Advisory Group to move to and help secure the crash site. The CAP 2-4-2 patrol moved to the crash site fired on two VC throwing grenades and firing small arms at the burning aircraft. The enemy fled south without returning fire. A sweep of the area was nonproductive. Pyle’s body was recovered at 12:45 PM and delivered to the 2nd CAP Headquarters. [Taken from coffeltdatabase.org]
