honoring you.....
There is a place
Not far from here
Where spirits walk
And heroes live
And honor still resides.
It is a wall
With names inscribed
Of those who served
When they were asked...
The brothers of my youth.
I go there still
To walk and think
About my life,
And what I've done since
And things that might have been.
There is a debt
I can't repay
Too many lives were spent.
And one man's life cannot suffice
To make their deaths worthwhile.
But there is hope
In the memory
Of those we leave behind
Who know the price that freedom brings
Who can carry on in kind.
I send you now
To touch a name
So the vision can be passed
Remember there is honor still
It is for you to see it lasts.
They are not dead
And have a wish
As all old soldiers do
The reflection you see before you now
Is their wish to live in you.
Not far from here
Where spirits walk
And heroes live
And honor still resides.

Ashton Prindle
I have never forgotten Ashton Prindle, as a freshman watching a senior impressively captain our GHS wrestling team, or when before his graduation he climbed the tall school flag pole and drank a beer. He died a year later, but will live as long as someone still remembers him, which I very much do. RIP Pvt. Prindle.

Misadventure (Friendly fire)
PVT Ashton H. Prindle was an Airborne-qualified Infantryman serving with F Company, 58th Infantry, 101st Airborne Division. On April 23, 1968, PVT Prindle was on an evening ambush patrol outside of Camp Eagle in Thua Thien Province, RVN. While the team was in a stationary position, Prindle accompanied the patrol leader as he scouted out a suitable ambush location and its back approach. Before moving out, they sent word down the line of their intentions; however, word did not make it to the last man. When he looked up and saw an armed man approaching him in the darkness, he fired a single, well-placed shot, hitting Prindle in the head. A vehicle was dispatched from Camp Eagle to pick up the wounded Prindle. He still had a pulse when he was evacuated to a Navy hospital ship offshore, but died soon after.
