Memories of Herndon

Herndon was a childhood friend who left an indelible impression that has endured all these years. I lived several blocks away from his home in our neighborhood and smile at the memories from our youth. Herndon was an incredibly smart, funny, multi-talented and loyal friend. He loved music and excelled at playing the trumpet. He was in the Queens all-borough orchestra and later the all-city orchestra. Herndon always had a smile ready, the lyrics of the latest song or a jazz melody handy. Herndon was a natural leader in the Boy Scout troop we belonged to, that met on Friday evenings. One night we committed to memorizing all the points of the compass. That led to a spontaneous fun filled competition, laughing endlessly. His parents were gracious, serious, and kind. I hope one day to be able to gather with others to properly honor my friend and close a void that has remained open all these years.

Pathfinder

To the family of Herndon. My name is Rolando Montana and my dad, Rosendo Montana was the other Pathfinder with him on that day in 1970. My dad was KIA on that day, April 15, and his remains were not recovered until April 29. Needless to say, you are both hero's in my book. As I live in Arlington, VA, I always honor you and the others listed with my dad. Thank you and your family for your services. I believe I may have a few pictures along with my dads which I hope to post in the near future. May God always Bless us.
