Respected and Valued as a Mentor
As a second lieutenant Robert D. Pope was the tactical officer for the Second Platoon of OC 30-67 in which I received Infantry Officer training. I was saddened and shocked to recently learn that he was killed in Vietnam. If it had not been for the training that I received from him, I might very well be listed on the Wall myself. I am forever indebted to him.

Remembering An American Hero
Dear 1LT Robert Dale Pope, sir
As an American, I would like to thank you for your service and for your sacrifice made on behalf of our wonderful country. The youth of today could gain much by learning of heroes such as yourself, men and women whose courage and heart can never be questioned.
May God allow you to read this, and may He allow me to someday shake your hand when I get to Heaven to personally thank you. May he also allow my father to find you and shake your hand now to say thank you; for America, and for those who love you.
With respect, and the best salute a civilian can muster for you, Sir
Curt Carter

Escort
I escorted Lieutenant Pope from Oakland to Coleman in 1968. Even though I didn't personally know him I learned a great deal about him from his family and friends in Coleman. He was loved and respected by everyone who knew him and I have never forgotten that experience. I hope his widow and children have found happiness in their lives and would like to thank them and the people of Coleman who were so kind to me.
