Knew Him in Army at Ft. Bliss, Tx

Through the winter of 1969-70 Jerry and I were in different classes studying Vietnamese at the Defense Language Inst. Support Command, Ft. Bliss, but we played on the school basketball team together. He was preparing to return to Nam for another tour and was in a short course while I was in a year’s course to be an interpreter/translator. He and his buddy Woody finished and moved out as planned. We got the news at the military school when he went MIA, and it sounded like that was it for Jerry and all of them. That’s not good news for preparing to go to war. I saw the news of his change to KIA a few decades later and went to see his name on the Chicago Wall downtown, a great place for it by the river.
Jerry was a real person, friend and American Hero, with whom I played ball and drank a couple of appropriate beverages. If I find a picture in my boxes, I’ll post it.
May he Rest In Peace.

As a junior in high school I bought a POW bracelet with the name of a guy also from Illinois. I wore the bracelet every day, and the year after I graduated I too entered the US Army. I wore the bracelet to first formation every day and after being told to take it off because it was not part of the uniform, I would have to do 50 pushups. By the time basic training had ended I had a group of guys who would drop and do 50 pushups along with me every day in honor of Jerry Pool. This year it has been 50 years since Captain Jerry Pool made the ultimate sacrifice, and I am honored to have had his bracelet for those 50 years. Remember and Honor those who have fallen in battle.

Bracelet

I wore Capt. Jerry Pool’s bracelet throughout high school and still have it. When I go to Washington, I make it a point to go to the Vietnam Memorial and pay my respects. God bless you, Capt. Pool. Thank you for your service to our country.

The Meaning of Rememberence

I found a bracelet with your name on it, Sir. My father was in Vietnam too and I felt a special connection to it. I googled your name and found out what price you paid to serve your country. Thank you for fighting so my dad could come home. I left the bracelet with Macomb IL PD. I hope it returns to the person who treasured it and thought of you with great honor.
