Once Made Aware, Never Forget
Jim Haas, historian, former teacher and current substitute teacher of North Ridgeville Schools, in North Ridgeville, Ohio, prepped our 8th grade students just prior to entry into and along the black granite facade of the revered Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall, in Washington DC, on Thursday, May 12, 2022. He told of Maya Lin, of Athens, Ohio, and how her design of The Wall, was selected to honor those who paid the ultimate sacrifice during the Vietnam War.
He went on to tell the story of Airman 1st Class William H. Pitsenbarger, fellow Buckeye of Piqua, who had offered his life so that others may live. Mr. Haas helped us locate William H. Pitsensbarger’s name. We made a rubbing. By Memorial Day, 2022, we pledge to locate, and mail a sympathy card to members of “Bill’s” Gold Star Family. We plan to learn about his
Pitsenbarger’s young valorous life by viewing the film that Mr. Haas had recommended, The Last Full Measure. In addition, we will read articles and books, about his bravery, and hope to view his exhibit displayed at The National Air Force Museum at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, in Dayton. Perhaps, one day, we may present in person, an Honor and Remember Flag to Bill’s beloved family, and offer a prayer and our “Thank You,” at his gravesite in Covington, Ohio.
