I was one of your replacements

Dear Lyle, maybe you know me. I come to your grave every Memorial Day. The last two years I have been leaving a Marine Corps flag at your grave. I know you served with India Company, 3rd Platoon, 3rd Battalion, 27th Marines, because that was my first outfit. The 27th Marines went home in September of 68. Oh, how I wish you could have gone with them. I transferred to H/2/1, the outfit that replaced 3/27. I had gone to China Beach on a work detail and saw your name in a book where Marines would leave their name and address......I couldn't believe I had spent a whole month with 3rd Platoon not knowing there was a Marine from Council Bluffs serving with me. I took down all your information and called you when I got home. That is when I found out you had died on Operation Allenbrook. Allenbrook was a very bad operation. India Company was almost wiped out. The survivors of Allenbrook trained me to survive. I am so grateful for Marines like you who saved my life. Semper Fidelis, my warrior brother. William H. Remembering An American Hero

Dear PFC Lyle Preston Bills, sir

As an American, I would like to thank you for your service and for your sacrifice made on behalf of our wonderful country. The youth of today could gain much by learning of heroes such as yourself, men and women whose courage and heart can never be questioned.

May God allow you to read this, and may He allow me to someday shake your hand when I get to Heaven to personally thank you. May he also allow my father to find you and shake your hand now to say thank you; for America, and for those who love you.

With respect, Sir

Curt Carter
