Ground Casualty
SP4 Terrence R. Billings was a clerk/typist serving with the 155th Transportation Company, Army Support Command Cam Ranh Bay, 1st Logistical Command, U.S. Army Republic of Vietnam. On July 24, 1970, Billings, who was trained by the Army to perform clerical duties, was inexplicably with a combat unit conducting a reconnaissance patrol three kilometers (1.8 miles) east of the Cam Ranh seaport in Khanh Hoa Province, RVN, when he was injured in a tumble down a steep incline. An aeromedical evacuation aircraft was requested to the scene, and Billings was placed in a litter (rescue basket) and hoisted from the ground. About 20 feet up, the cable broke and the basket fell back to earth. He was admitted to the 483rd U.S. Air Force Hospital at Cam Ranh in serious condition with a brain stem injury; he expired three days later. Billings, an Army volunteer, was 18 years old.
