Ground Casualty
PFC Venus D. Payton Jr. was trained as a basic operational communications man serving with Military Police Company, Headquarters Battalion, 3rd Marine Division, III MAF. On October 9, 1968, PFC Payton was performing his duties on a bridge between Quang Tri Combat Base and Quang Tri City when a passing truck knocked him in the river below.
