Ground Casualty
PFC William C. Biffle was a mechanic serving with the 61st Maintenance Company (General Support), 185th Maintenance Battalion, 29th General Service Group, Army Support Command Saigon, 1st Logistical Command, U.S. Army Republic of Vietnam. The 29th General Support provided broad and varied logistics support to U.S. Army and Free World Military Assistance Forces in Military Region III in addition to general support maintenance for both Military Regions III and IV. Biffle’s unit, the 185th Maintenance Battalion, was given the responsibility of providing direct maintenance support to all tactical, non-divisional units in and around the Long Binh-Saigon area. On the early morning of September 20, 1969, he was at a base camp approximately 70 kilometers (42 miles) northeast of the capital when he was found expired in his bed. His body was transported to the 93rd Evacuation Hospital at Long Binh where medical staff recorded the cause of death as “unknown.” Nine months after Biffle’s death, the Army issued a final casualty report on June 25, 1970, indicating that toxicological studies conducted by the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology in Washington, D.C., failed to reveal a specific cause of death. At Long Binh, an inquiry was conducted to gather facts about the incident by the Army’s Criminal Investigation Division; however, it is unclear what outcome it produced as the Army generally provided very little details regarding such investigations. Biffle was 21 years old. [Taken from coffeltdatabase.org]
