Misadventure (Friendly Fire)
In May 1968, the U.S. Army’s 2nd Battalion, 47th Infantry was involved in a fight at the Y-Bridge in the Cholon District of Saigon. On May 12th, two recent transfers to 2/47 were killed in a friendly fire incident. The following is an account of the incident by Bob Dyson: "SP4 Anthony P. Palumbo and PFC Philip M. Wooten were killed by a short artillery round that hit us just as we were preparing to assault a Viet Cong position in Saigon. The artillery was supposed to stop, so we came out of cover and this round landed amongst 10 men. Two were killed (Palumbo and Wooten), seven were wounded, and the tenth had a nervous breakdown later. I understand that the fatally injured Wooten died on the chopper pad awaiting evacuation." My friend from Lovejoy and Sloan in the early years........
Tony and I were friends in the YMCA when we were kids and in high school. I read his obit when I returned from a bomb delivery convoy to the Laos border. It was his big smile that was striking. Once you knew Tong, you never forgot him. See you when I cross over, Tony.

Remembering An American Hero
Dear SP4 Anthony Paul Palumbo, sir
As an American, I would like to thank you for your service and for your sacrifice made on behalf of our wonderful country. The youth of today could gain much by learning of heroes such as yourself, men and women whose courage and heart can never be questioned.
May God allow you to read this, and may He allow me to someday shake your hand when I get to Heaven to personally thank you. May he also allow my father to find you and shake your hand now to say thank you; for America, and for those who love you.
With respect, and the best salute a civilian can muster for you, Sir
Curt Carter
