Sgt. Olson and I served together with company D 3/60th 9th Infantry mobile riverine force. We were on patrol on the south bank of the Mekong River near the 9th infantrys base camp dong tam. We were in a agent orange sprayed area when we saw a movement in a enemy bunker we were investagating when we were hit with small arms and rocket propelled grenade fire.
Sgt Olsen was hit by grenade fragments and was killed another soldier that was with us for a short time tried to run up front to get m60 machine gun fire on the enemy was shot in the chest and killed I can't even remember his name. But I think of this fire fight often. I was hit with grenade fragments. My weapon was damaged and would not fire and this other kid was hit in the face with fragments and could not see so we low crawled down the trail to where there was lessfire going on. On the way back I saw sparrow a black soldier I told him that Olson was dead and he just started to cry.
I got to where Sgt. Micheal Lewis was and he took care of my wounds and the dead and wounded ere evactuated to dong tam by chopper. I didn't get to tell Lewis thanks he was killed June 13, 1969. Olson and the soldier were well liked and good soldiers. I know that olson had a twin brother I would like to find hi I have a few pictuers of Sgt. Olson. Rest in peace my friends.
