Ground Casualty

PFC Jesus M. Berrios-Rivera was a Pioneer serving with the 553rd Engineer Company, 20th Engineer Battalion, 35th Engineer Group, 18th Engineer Brigade, U.S. Army Republic of Vietnam Engineer Command. “Pioneer” was the military occupation specialty for soldiers employed to perform engineering and construction tasks. During the second half of 1970, the 20th Engineer Battalion was busily working in Military Region II on bunkers, aircraft revetments, and repairs to several airfields. Further effort went to operating quarries and asphalt plants for the ongoing highway improvement program. On the late afternoon of December 2, 1970, Berrios-Rivera died at Dong Ba Tinh, seven kilometers (4.3 miles) northwest of Cam Ranh Bay Air Base in Khanh Hoa Province, RVN. A subsequent casualty report issued December 16, 1970, listed the cause of death as “an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound”; however, in an improbable action, the Army released a later report on May 13, 1971, which amended the interim report to “accidental self-inflicted gunshot wound,” ostensibly to remove the suicide code from Barrios-Rivera’s casualty reference to reduce the number of reportable suicides in Vietnam.
