Ground Casualty

SP6 Leon G. Nelson was an Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) specialist serving with Headquarters & Headquarters Company (HHC), 3rd Ordnance Battalion (Ammunition), Explosive Disposal Section, 53rd General Support Group, Army Support Command Saigon, 1st Logistical Command. On July 1, 1967, Nelson was with a team of explosive ordnance disposal specialists cleaning up the Ammunition Storage Point at Duc Pho Base Camp in Quang Ngai Province, RVN, after it had experienced several major explosions. During the operation, Nelson placed a M406 40mm high explosive grenade next to a 105mm high explosive plastic (HEP) projectile. The 40mm grenade detonated, causing a low-order detonation of the 105mm projectile. The combined explosions killed Nelson instantly. Thank You

Dear Sp 6 Leon Nelson, Thank you for your service as an Explosive Ordnance Disposal Specialist - EOD. Saying thank you isn't enough, but it is from the heart. It’s a New Year, but not necessarily better. Time passes quickly. Please watch over America, it stills needs your strength, courage and faithfulness, especially now. Rest in peace with the angels.

Remembering An American Hero

Dear SP6 Leon G Nelson, sir

As an American, I would like to thank you for your service and for your sacrifice made on behalf of our wonderful country. The youth of today could gain much by learning of heroes such as yourself, men and women whose courage and heart can never be questioned.

May God allow you to read this, and may He allow me to someday shake your hand when I get to Heaven to personally thank you. May he also allow my father to find you and shake your hand now to say thank you; for America, and for those who love you.

With respect, and the best salute a civilian can muster for you, Sir

Curt Carter
