Remembering An American Hero

Dear SP5 Bruce Anthony Nelson, sir

As an American, I would like to thank you for your service and for your sacrifice made on behalf of our wonderful country. The youth of today could gain much by learning of heroes such as yourself, men and women whose courage and heart can never be questioned.

May God allow you to read this, and may He allow me to someday shake your hand when I get to Heaven to personally thank you. May he also allow my father to find you and shake your hand now to say thank you; for America, and for those who love you.

With respect, and the best salute a civilian can muster for you, Sir

Curt Carter

I WAS THERE when you were killed.

B Company, 588th Engineer Battalion had a mission to reinforce A Company who was building a Special Forces Fort at Thien Ngon, Tay Ninh, Vietnam. You can still see the fort using Google Earth. The two Engineer Companies combined dump trucks and loaders the make the star shaped earth berms. Bravo Company assumed the mine sweeping of the road each morning. On the 4th day, Feb 15, 68, I tried to break the pattern of starting each morning from base camp. The 1st Platoon slept at the borrow pit and starting sweeping TO base camp. Everyone was waiting until the road was cleared.
Suddenly I saw your platoon heading toward me sweeping the road to clear any mines.
When we were about 300 yards apart the North Vietnamese Army ambushed your platoon. We lost 4 engineers and 7 wounded that day. I lead the 1st Platoon in attacking the NVA and forced them to retreat, breaking the ambush. As they retreated they carried their dead and wounded with them so I don't know how many they lost. I do know they left many blood trails.
We were never attached again and we finished the fort and returned to Tay Ninh.
I think of that day often. I have found the other 3 men killed that day and have traveled to their grave sites and conducted a "Remembering a Fallen Commrade Service" with their families.
Bruce, I am searching on the web for your grave site in Missouri so you can be honored. Please, Nelson kin, help me; contact me!
