Hail The Brave, My Friend.

Dear Jimmy Nakayama.

I know that this probably doesn't mean much, but I had seen the movie "We Were Soldiers." I had cried watching the movie, mainly at the part when I learned of your ill fate. It had touched me so deeply, that I have no words that can completely describe the depth in which it left a mark in me. You are a true hero. I don't care about all of the super hero things that exist. I care about people like you, who had given your all. Your story has changed who I am. Your story has changed my view of the world. Some may think of me as dimwitted because the story of Jimmy Nakayama has inspired me to enlist in the army when I graduate. I know that war is no joke. War is real, and war is hell. My grandfather was almost sent to Vietnam, but he got lucky and was only stationed in Germany. My family's military history dates back to at least the Civil War. I can not describe how much I wish you were still alive, as the world has suffered a massive loss. The world will never be the same without you, even though I never knew you. I will never know the pain you suffered until my fate comes to an end. I may not ever know the pain, but it is in a sea of possibilities. The world will never be the same without Jimmy Nakayama. I don't respect people unless they prove their worth. I may not have known you, but I respect you with my life. You are one of the bravest souls I have ever heard of. I strive to become like you. I don't want fame.. glory... popularity... a pampered life... I want to earn the respect I am given. I have heard so many stories about you... You inspire me, Jimmy. I hope to meet you one day when my fate turns. I want to honor you. I will honor you. I want to spread your story so you will never be forgotten. I know you won't be able to see this, but I hope just someday I can tell you this... I hope that one day... That I'll be able to salute to you. Rest ever so softly in peace and love. May god bless you and watch over your brave soul.

Sincerely,

Melanie O.

Remembering the daughter of Jimmy Nakayama

Greeting in peace and condolence to the family of PFC Jimmy Nakayama. I greet you humbly in Jesus name and to God the creator of us all. I had the pleasure to meet the daughter of PFC Jimmy Nakayama during one of my trips to the Vietnam Memorial Wall at a service of remembrance for the 1st CAV Air Mobility Reunion, then an annual event. The ceremony always took place approximately 0600hrs or o'dark-thirty as some have said. I was a guest of retired General Hal Moore to sing the National Anthem, as well as, the "Lord's Prayer" at the closing of the ceremony. It was always a pleasure to be invited from 1998 to 2004,after making my first trip there in 1997. After picking up the book, WE WERE SOLDIERS ONCE and YOUNG, while visiting a Border's bookstore one evening at the Colonial Park Mall,Harrisburg,PA,in 1997,I discovered the name of my first cousin,SFC William Brooks Mitchell, in the inside jacket of the book listed along with the other 158 or so names of those KIA in the Ia Drang Valley battle in Vietnam,15-17 November, 1965. My cousin William,a medic with the HHC Co,the commander's unit.I t was always a great honor to attend the banquet( on the evening prior to the morning ceremonies) for those 7 years. I pray that although SFC Nakayama's daughter was just a baby at the time of his death, that her mother and family have kept his memory alive. Yes, he gave all serving this nation, even as many of his compatriots did so. Peace and blessings of divine health, joy and peace to the family of SFC Jimmy Nakayama. Rest in peace soldier. Eric L. Jackson,Jr. ,Retired(Supt.),PA ANG,193 Special Operations Wing,Middletown,PA,Chaplain Office. It would be an honor to sing at a future commemoration or veteran's service in honor of you loved on, Jimmy [email protected].
