My Hero

I served with MSgt David McLeod at Eglin AFB, Florida and NKP Thailand. MSgt Mcleod was a HH-53 Flight Engineer Flight Instructor at Eglin and I was one of his students. MSgt McLeod was an excellent instructor and well liked by my fellow students. MSgt McLeod was selected to be one of the flight engineers on the Son Tay Raid. For his gallantry, MSgt McLeod was awarded a Silver Star. He was a hero to all Air Force Flight Engineers that knew him. In 1973, I was stationed with MSgt McLeod at NKP Thailand with the Jolly Green Giants of the 40th ARRS. While flying over Cambodia, MSgt McLeod's helicopter experienced a tragic mechanical failure that took his life. A great man died that day. MSgt McLeod gave so much to his country. I remember MSgt McLeod as my hero.

Thank you.

David McLeod is my maternal grandfather, who went missing in action when my mother was seven. Every year on the anniversary of the event, my mother locks herself away in her room and thinks about him - even in her 50's. His disappearance has had such an impact on not only her life, but the life of her children. We never had the chance to meet him, but we still hold him in high regards as a hero of our country. I wanted to say thank you to everyone that took the time to leave a remembrance for him. It fills my mother with great joy to know that his memory lives on, so many years later.
