Remembering An American Hero

Dear WO Timothy James McKiernan, sir

As an American, I would like to thank you for your service and for your sacrifice made on behalf of our wonderful country. The youth of today could gain much by learning of heroes such as yourself, men and women whose courage and heart can never be questioned.

May God allow you to read this, and may He allow me to someday shake your hand when I get to Heaven to personally thank you. May he also allow my father to find you and shake your hand now to say thank you; for America, and for those who love you.

With respect, and the best salute a civilian can muster for you, Sir

Curt Carter

Final Mission of U.S. Army helicopter UH-1C tail number 64-14146

This helicopter was from the 117th Assault Helicopter Company, 145th Combat Aviation Battalion. On January 28, 1968, an engine failure occurred briefly after takeoff while over the city of Bien Hoa. The pilot, WO1 Timothy J. McKiernan, was able to successfully divert away from the city to a nearby field where the aircraft encountered a hard landing, resulting in an explosion and fire. WO1 McKiernan suffered fatal injuries in the crash. For his heroic self-sacrifice he was later awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, posthumously. His three crew mates survived with injuries.
