YOU ARE NOT FORGOTTEN!

Dear Private Muniz ~ You Are Not Forgotten!
This will be the 4th year, on that anniversary of your passing (tomorrow May 17, 1970), that I will ran a mile with you in my thoughts and prayers. Rest in Peace, Dear Brother.

Each year since September 2015, at the annual 5th Division Army reunion, members of the Society of the Fifth Division, U.S Army remember the 514 soldiers from the 1st Brigade, 5th Division, who were Killed in Action in Vietnam. You are among the soldiers remembered. You Are Not Forgotten!

Ground Casualty

The 1st Brigade, 5th Infantry Division was dispatched to South Vietnam following the Tet Offensive in support of 3rd Marine Division forces deployed in Quang Tri Province. The brigade served from July 1968 until August 1971, contributing to the defense of the Vietnamese Demilitarized Zone. A unit of engineers from A Company, 7th Engineer Battalion supported the brigade from Camp Roberts located five kilometers (3.1 miles) west of Quang Tri city. On the evening of May 17, 1970, an A Company bridge crewman died in barracks building 205 at Roberts. PVT Daniel H. Muniz reportedly placed his assigned M16 rifle to his left temple and pulled the trigger. Muniz was alone at the time. A total of three shots were heard. The weapon’s selector switch had been set to automatic; he died instantly. Army investigators determined Muniz had been drinking in celebration of his birthday. They also noted that he had recently struggled with drug abuse and received a reduction in rank. Muniz, an Army volunteer, had previously served in West Germany before reenlisting for deployment to Vietnam. He was 21 years old. [Taken from coffeltdatabase.org]
