To Hawkeye
To Hawkeye
A friend there never was so dear
A sportsman not as keen.
We spent our time together then
We lived our lives as one
But now I sit alone and wait
And wonder why you're gone.
Many a day will come to pass
And many a stag will fall
But our hearts are one until the time
The wild goose no longer flies.
And the out of doors will weep my friend
Before your memory dies.
With every chevron flight I see
With every arrow sent
The thought of you will fill my mind
My joys are yours to share
For now until forever, Grant,
I'll be wishing you were there.
Hawkeye was killed in action in the
Republic of Vietnam on 16 February 1967.
Farewell, My Friend
May your spirit hunt the wily goose
And chase the cunning deer.
I will carry your companionship
With me forever, Grant.
Our hearts shall walk together.
