A cold Coke on a REALLY HOT MORNING.
We were slowly advancing down a street in Nha Trang, S. Vietnam. We're heading for
the next street, the end of which the God's of War are going at one-another. NVA Sappers over-ran an FFV office bldg, a block long & 2 stories tall with a wall around it.
An Airborne MP Company's compound is on opposite of street and has a wall around it too. The sound is deafening, and we are thirsty. We come up to an Airforce guy with an M-16. We still had M-14s. He's sitting on the edge of a concrete culvert on its end. Airforce pays us no attention. "Where can we get some water?" He points to a
doorway behind his perch. Hadn't even noticed that black hole in the wall. Go inside
and are blinded by the dark and it's cold! Our eyes become adjusted and we can see
tables & chairs on one side and a bar on the other. A gin mill! Three rough-looking Americans wearing civilian clothes are at the bar drinking. Each wear brim hats, shades and gun-belts and holsters with guns. They have all kinds of firepower on the bar and leaning against it. You and I look at each other and mouth "W-T-F!". The bartender finishes load beer into coolers and asks what we'd like to drink. "What you got?" We are still kind of stunned. He smiles and makes a sweeping motion with his right arm to shelves of every brand and type of booze made. I know what you're thinking BUT we've got business down the street. We settle for four cans of Coke,
offer to pay, declined and we leave. Bill, to this day I still wonder if that place was real
or a mirage caused by being out in the hot sun too long. That was a long time ago Old Buddy, the first morning of the Tet Offensive, 30 Jan 1968. I wish we could meet-up outside that place, go inside and sample us a few of that fancy liquor. I'm 79 so maybe.......... Ernie

A cold beer on a hot day.
That was on 18 May 1968 at Phu Bai. You are the best friend I had in 3 years in Vietnam 6 years in the Army. Remember the small rat that chased out the big rat? Say hello for me to my older brother Jerry. Those SP Packs really lifted our spirits. I'm getting close to the end of the road so put in a good word. Think of you often.
