Ground Casualty

The Military Assistance Command, Vietnam (MACV) Team 66 compound was located near Ong Nu, 11 kilometers (6.8 miles) southwest of Cai Lay in Dinh Tuong Province, RVN. The team provided training to the Army of the Republic of Vietnam (ARVN) and territorial units of the Regional and Popular Forces. Teams generally consisted of two officers, three enlisted men, and an ARVN interpreter. Their primary mission was to advise and instruct the Vietnamese units on field fortifications, barrier systems, indirect fire support, and small unit operations with emphasis on night operations and ambushes, patrols, weapons employment, and emergency medical care. On August 19, 1971, two Americans from Team 66 were killed in an explosion at the Mobile Advisory Team 1 (MAT-1) house on the Team 66 compound. The MAT-1 team house was located in a CONEX cargo box container. Team leader CPT Christopher G. Morbitzer and medic SFC Jerome A. Browder Jr. died after a booby trap placed on the door of the Conex container exploded when opened. Both men sustained fatal blast and fragmentation injuries. [Taken from coffeltdatabase.org]
