Ground Casualty
Cu Chi Base Camp was a U.S. Army and Army of the Republic of Vietnam (ARVN) base in the Cu Chi District in Hau Nghia Province, RVN. Cu Chi was established in 1966 as the headquarters for 25th Infantry Division. The base was constructed adjacent to National Route QL-1, approximately 20 miles northwest of Saigon. It was located south of the Viet Cong stronghold known as the Iron Triangle, and was near, and in some cases above, the infamous Cu Chi Tunnels. The base was supported by the 25th Medical Battalion which provided medical services and supplies for division personnel. Other services included dental and laboratory clinics. On the early morning of July 1, 1966, a 25th Medical Battalion lab specialist, SSG Gary N. Miyake, was stricken after suffering a heart attack. He was transported to the 93rd Evacuation Hospital at Long Binh Post where he expired shortly after being admitted. Postmortem studies followed, and it was subsequently reported that Miyake succumbed to myocardial infarction, commonly understood as a heart attack, secondary to arteriosclerotic heart disease. An 18-year Army veteran, he was 44 years old. Miyake was survived by a wife and two daughters, his parents, and a brother, all residing in Hawaii. [Sourced at coffeltdatabase.org]
