Shipmate and friend
Jim and I became good friends in the short time I knew him. He and I owned a car together and would return to his home town when possible. I can’t remember the girl he would stop to see , I also met his mother and sister on those trips. Jim and I frequently went on liberty together mostly because I would keep him out of trouble and make certain he returned to base or the Ship in a timely manor.

Casualty at Sea
FN James E. Bell was a fireman serving aboard the stores ship USS Vega (AF-59). At 1000 hours on June 3, 1968, the Vega was steaming in the Gulf of Tonkin when it was reported that FN Bell was missing. He had been present earlier at muster at 0745 hours. The Master at Arms organized a search party to look for Bell. At 1103 hours, general quarters stations were manned in order to make a more thorough search for Bell. He was not located and presumed lost at sea. His remains were never located. [Taken from coffeltdatabase.org]
