Honor Him

William was the husband of Susan S. Mullins, the son of William F. Mullins and Elly V. Mullins, the dear brother of Patricia and brothers Dennis and Peter Mullins. William completed his final year at Millburn High School graduating in 1961. He attended North Carolina State University, shortly upon graduation he was notified that that he would be drafted but enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps applying for OCS on May 27 1966 in Quantico VA. He was commissioned as a 2dLt in the Reserve and underwent artillery instruction at Fort Sill in Lawton Oklahoma before being ordered for duty in Vietnam. Promoted to 1st Lieutenant William was assigned to and served with Battery H, 12th Marines, 3d Battalion, 3d MARDIV (Rein) FMF.

During the month of October the Battalion continued providing support of the 4th Marine Regiment in northern Quang Tri Province. Company G was providing security for the C-2 Battery H Artillery positon and bridge on route 561, 3 kilometers south of Con Thien in Gio Linh District. In the early morning of October 14 the Marines positon came under heavy rocket, artillery and mortar followed by a ground attack by the NVA. After a barrage of 100 rounds, the NVA infiltrated the Marine defenses throwing grenades. During the battle twenty one men were killed in the action and many more were wounded, 1stLt William Mullins was one of the casualties, he was killed in a defensive position by a hostile grenade.

Upon arriving in Vietnam, William was assigned to Hello Battery, 3rd Battalion, 12th Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division.
Survived by his wife, Susan J Mullins and his parents; William F and Elly V Mullins, all of Short Hills, New Jersey.

Major Carl Steven Merlino was awarded the Silver Star Medal for his conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action. He served as an Operations and Training Staff Officer and was assigned to ADV TEAM 73, HQ, MACV ADVISORS.
