My Big Brother

My oldest son Mike (named for my brother) just sent this link to me, and i want to thank all of you that posted kind words about my big brother Mike Mad Dog Melvin, as he was called by all of his football team mates.
He really did have an adventurous spirit and had he lived he would have been really int any and all extreme sports.

He was a really great guy and a wonderful protective brother, no one messed with me because of his reputation and the fact that the whole foot ball team would have had his back.
Such a bummer at 21 and families face the same loss today. Support our troops and veterans. Through the (VVA) Vietnam Veterans Association and DAV (Disabled American Veterans) Both of these do a lot of good for our men and women that served so that we can enjoy this Memorial weekend at the beach.

Remembering Mike

A mutual friend just sent this page to me and I am overwhelmed seeing that smiling face that I knew and loved from high school. To Jerry B Brown, in particular: Thank you for your personal posting about Mike. He truly had an adventuress spirit and believed 100% in what he was doing. The last time I saw Mike was the day I brought my son home from the hospital (my husband was serving in Vietnam at the time)...the day he was killed, I received a Mother's Day card "To My Sis"...he had just come out of the field for a short period when he purchased it. It took two weeks before we received the awful news of his passing. A life of so much potential, cut short at 21 years of age. Mike was more than a friend...he was my "brother". He was one of the most honest people I've ever known and even 47 years later, I can still hear his voice. Always in my heart, Mike.

Friends through time

I remember the first time we met on the school bus going toward Lincoln Junior High. You sat next and said hi, I'm Mike, what's your name? I said Kenny and from then on we were friends but then again every person you met you easily made friends with. Those were the good days.
It was in shock to everyone you knew that you had passed. We at home heard it was from friendly fire. I still to this day don't know and I don't know if any of your other friends know.
I know one thing Mike that if you could see the crap that's going on today and the way the government treats the troops that are coming home from the many battles and wars fought for justice it would blow your mind. I'm sure you would have been in general by now and oh how you would have fit in. Well buddy we are having our 50th reunion in a couple months and you will be remembered there. So that your friends look to the heavens for you and now you looked around us know that we're doing okay and we will be seeing you in the next 10 or 20 years. GO PANTHERS OF 65.... GO BLACK AN WHITE... Your friend and buddy, Kenny

Remembering An American Hero

Dear SGT Michael Wayne Melvin, sir

As an American, I would like to thank you for your service and for your sacrifice made on behalf of our wonderful country. The youth of today could gain much by learning of heroes such as yourself, men and women whose courage and heart can never be questioned.

May God allow you to read this, and may He allow me to someday shake your hand when I get to Heaven to personally thank you. May he also allow my father to find you and shake your hand now to say thank you; for America, and for those who love you.

With respect, Sir

Curt Carter
