To An Uncle I Never Knew - You Are With Me
Uncle Robert,
Although we have never met, I know you. You have been with me ever since I was a boy. I'd spend what seemed like days pouring over the scrapbooks my Mother kept about you. Seeing your accomplishments inspired me in a way I can only understand as an adult.
I will share with you an excerpt from a book compiled by Ray W. Stubbe. It reads:
"BELCHER was in the communications section of 3/26 with some exotic MOS for which a battalion didn't even have the equipment, so he spent his time humping a radio for a line company part time and H&S Comm Section the other part of the time. 'He was one of those guys that belonged on a recruiting poster: He looked the part. He looked like he came out of a John Wayne movie. He was good looking, and he was one of the nicest people I ever met.'"
Reading this, years later as an adult, I can see how you touched everyone you came in contact with. Your actions make you a man of great honor, courage, and bravery.
You are a hero to everyone in our family.
On this Veteran's Day weekend, one which you would have celebrated your 56th birthday; I wanted to post this remembrance of you for all your friends and family to see if they look you up on this Virtual Wall.
Love, your nephew,
Bob
