Ground Casualty
II Field Force, Vietnam was a U.S. Army Corps-level command during the Vietnam War. Activated on March 15, 1966, it became the largest corps command in Vietnam and one of the largest in Army history. II Field Force was a component of U.S. Military Assistance Command Vietnam (MACV) and had its headquarters at Long Binh Post in Bien Hoa Province, RVN. Its area of responsibility was Military Region III which comprised the eleven provinces surrounding the capital of Saigon. The 29th Field Artillery Regiment was under the control of II Field Force and maintained a M42 40mm “Duster” battery at Long Binh Post for perimeter defense. On the late evening of April 30, 1968, a supply specialist from I Battery, 29th Arty took his own life in the Duster compound at Long Binh. SP4 John C. Mattheisen reportedly used an M16 rifle on full automatic to fire two rounds into his head and neck. He died instantly. Following an investigation, the Army chose to treat the incident as an accidental shooting. Mattheisen was 18 years old. [Sourced at coffeltdatabase.org]

Thank you for your service to our country so long ago sir. You died at 18 years of age. I am 74 and have lived a long and fulfilling life. It is tragic you never had that same opportunity. May you rest in eternal peace.
