But for you, I would be in your place on the wall.
I served with Richard Behnke as an Advisor to the 4th BN, 51st ARVN Regiment '68 & '69. He had just joined his Bn Team a short time before his death. In movement to a PZ for insertion, my BN received sniper fire and we were deployed to silence the sniper and to cover the rest of the lift. Cpt Behnke's reserve BN took our place in the eventual assualt and we became the reserve BN. That night he was killed with his BN where my 4th BN should have been. Only God would know if it would have been different had I been there instead of Cpt Behnke. He was the staff officer that got me an advisors position when I arrived in country, and I was the officer who talked him into joining a vacency on a sister BN's Advisory Tm. Forgive me Richard, I still grieve for your loss. Major Earl Crosby McDowell. (Friends or family are welcome to email me.)
