Ground Casualty
In the early morning hours of October 28, 1965, the Naval Mobile Construction Battalion Nine (NMCB-9) camp came under a heavy mortar and machine gun attack from the Viet Cong. The attacking force, estimated at 150 to 200, was robust and well organized; however, the Seabees defended their ground, and no penetration of the NMCB-9 camp was made. During the first minutes of the attack, SD3 Restituto P. Adenir was severely wounded by mortar shrapnel while attempting to take cover. He was air evacuated to the Third Marine Medical Battalion where he succumbed to his wounds at 6:21 AM the following day. Another forty-five NMCB-9 personnel were wounded. One of the wounded, BUL2 Donald D. Haskins, was evacuated to the U.S. Air Force Hospital at Clark Air Base in the Philippines. He succumbed to his injuries three days later. On November 21, 1965, the Naval Mobile Construction Battalion Nine camp at Da Nang East was named Camp Adenir in honor of the fallen Seabee, the first from NMCB-9 to die from enemy action in Vietnam.
