Attack on Quang Tri Air Field - January 27, 1968
Quang Tri Air Field was located one kilometer (.6 miles) southwest of Quang Tri city in Quang Tri Province, RVN. On the early morning of January 27, 1968, the airfield was hit with sixty rounds of 122mm enemy rocket fire. Three Americans were killed including the commander of 5th Battalion, 7th Cavalry, COL Herlihy T. Long. Also lost were SGT Joseph L. Begotka and PFC James D. Youngham (posthumously promoted to Corporal). Another twelve were wounded. Material losses included damage to the 1st Battalion, 8th Cavalry communication jeep which had its tires blown out, windshield and lights shattered, and unknown damage to its radios.
