Attack on Da Nang Air Base - August 23, 1968
Da Nang Air Base was a primary entry point for American service members arriving by jet airliner during the war. The facility was located in the city of Da Nang in Quang Nam Province, RVN. It served as a major base for U.S. Army, U.S. Air Force, and U.S. Marine Corps units stationed in Military Region I. At 3:00 AM on August 23, 1968, the base received thirteen enemy 122mm rockets. The exploding projectiles killed one U.S. Air Force personnel and wounded three others including one U.S. Navy man. The lost airman was Capt Harreld P. Martin, a decorated pilot with the 20th Tactical Air Support Squadron. Martin was the recipient of the Distinguished Flying Cross and Silver Star medal for previous action against the enemy. Material damage at Da Nang during the attack included several buildings, aircraft, and miscellaneous gear destroyed or damaged. [Sourced at coffeltdatabase.org]
