Remembering An American Hero

Dear LCPL Edward Leonard Mann Jr, sir

As an American, I would like to thank you for your service and for your sacrifice made on behalf of our wonderful country. The youth of today could gain much by learning of heroes such as yourself, men and women whose courage and heart can never be questioned.

May God allow you to read this, and may He allow me to someday shake your hand when I get to Heaven to personally thank you. May he also allow my father to find you and shake your hand now to say thank you; for America, and for those who love you.

With respect, and the best salute a civilian can muster for you, Sir

Curt Carter

Uncle Eddie

Terror and fear in their eyes, hoping not to be the next who dies. With their guns clutched very tight, killing men in this terrible fight. A young Marine, his held held high, praying to God,don't let me die. It was 1967,a young man of 18 was headed off for Vietnam. He was off to fight in the war. Knowing he would not be home for Christmas,he told his father, mother, sisters and brother to put a light,a blue light on the Christmas tree for him. This was so he could be there with them,in their hearts and minds, because they had never spent one Christmas apart. Also, the light was so the young Marine could find his way home ,from so far away. His mother bought all blue lights and decorated the tree with them. Christmas morning, when they all woke up,the Marine who said he shall not be home for Christmas, was sitting under the blue Christmas tree. Everyone was so happy, for what a suprise to have him home safe again. They spent Christmas together as one big happy family. After Christmas, off to war,the Vietnam war he went again. This time never to return, not even for Christmas. Though he may not be with them anymore, every Christmas, his mother, sisters and brotherall put a blue light on their window sill hoping maybe, the young Marine will find his way home. But,they need not worry, for he did not part, because he never left home within their hearts. By Ashley Currier Grade 9 1996.
