I remember a happy, funny nine year old kid.
Steve was a friend in elementary school. We had that connection kids make with other kids who share the same silly sense of humor. I moved away when I was nine, but I never forgot Steve. It broke my heart to learn he hadn’t come home.
Those of us who did get to grow into old men with memories have an obligation to remember those who did not get that chance.

YOU ARE NOT FORGOTTEN!
Dear Specialist 4 Bednar ~ You Are Not Forgotten!
This is the 3rd year, on the anniversary of your passing, that I ran a mile with you in my thoughts and prayers. Rest in Peace, Dear Brother.
Each year since September 2015, at the annual 5th Division Army reunion, members of the Society of the Fifth Division, U.S Army remember the 514 soldiers from the 1st Brigade, 5th Division, who were Killed in Action in Vietnam. You are among the soldiers remembered. You Are Not Forgotten!

Ground Casualty
SP4 Stephen A. Bednar was a medic serving with Headquarters & Headquarters Troop (HHT), 4th Squadron, 12th Cavalry, 1st Brigade, 5th Infantry Division. Bednar was assigned to A Troop, 4-12, a mechanized infantry unit. In July 1971, the 1st Brigade was conducting Operation Montana Mustang, a unilateral and combined operation with Republic of Vietnam troops to detect and destroy enemy forces and base areas in the western Quang Tri Province and along the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ). When A Troop was in their base camp at Quang Tri Combat Base, Bednar worked in the aid station as a medic. At 9:30 AM on July 15, 1971, he was found lying lifeless on the floor of the aid station. His body was taken to the 18th Surgical Hospital in Quang Tri where he was pronounced dead by medical staff. An autopsy revealed Bednar had succumbed to pulmonary edema probably due to acute viral inflammation. They couldn't determine the cause. He was twenty-one years old. His body was forwarded to the U.S. Army Mortuary in Da Nang for processing before being returned to his family in Pennsylvania. [Taken from coffeltdatabase.org]
