honoring you...

A butterfly lights beside us like a sunbeam
And for a brief moment its glory
and beauty belong to our world
But then it flies again
And though we wish it could have stayed...
We feel lucky to have seen it.

Misadventure (Friendly Fire)

On February 11, 1971, a squad-sized element from F Company, 2nd Battalion, 1st Marines, 1st Marine Division were conducting a night ambush inside in a tree line two miles northeast of Nui Dat Son (Hill 55) in Quang Nam Province, RVN. Three positions of Marines were concealed within the foliage. At little after 4:00 AM, a Marine in the middle position heard and observed movement and opened fire with his M16 rifle. Approximately fifteen rounds were fired. Evidently, one of the men in the right position had gone out to relieve himself without notifying the middle position. The Marines applied first aid and requested a medivac aircraft at 4:10 AM. The evacuation of two wounded personnel was completed thirty minutes later. An immediate investigation into the incident revealed that the fire had been directed into the right position, wounding two. One of the Marines, rifleman LCPL Benjamin K. Malabey, died of his wounds nine days later at the 95th Army Evacuation Hospital at Da Nang. [Taken from coffeltdatabase.org and ttu.edu]
