honoring you...
A butterfly lights beside us like a sunbeam
And for a brief moment its glory
and beauty belong to our world
But then it flies again
And though we wish it could have stayed...
We feel lucky to have seen it.

And though we wish it could have stayed...
We feel lucky to have seen it.

Ground Casualty
On April 18, 1966, a Viet Cong sapper attack occurred against the U.S. Marine Alpha North Battery compound, five miles northwest of Da Nang in Quang Nam Province, RVN. An estimated VC company, some wearing nothing but jockey shorts, attacked the compound at 1:45 AM. The VC commenced their simultaneous attack from the North, East, and West. Using wire cutters and Bangalore torpedoes to gain entrance, the Northeast corner of the perimeter was penetrated immediately and the outpost there overrun, killing two Marines. At other points around the compound, some of VC the tripped flares and were immediately taken under fire. Flareships and illumination rounds were deployed during the attack by friendly forces. A total of five Marines from A Battery, 1st Battalion, 11th Marines, 3rd Marine Division were killed. They included PFC Robert D. Arnold, LCPL Danny A. Bolin, LCPL Frederick Homeyer, PFC Ralph R. Lind Jr., and PFC William T. Main. Sixteen Marines were wounded, eleven of them seriously. The confirmed VC body count was fifteen, with eight automatic weapons and many grenades and satchel charges captured. Three Marine artillery pieces were damaged in the attack. It was reported at 5:30 AM that some VC had returned attempting to remove the bodies of their comrades. They were taken under fire. [Taken from coffeltdatabase.org]
