Remembering An American Hero

Dear SGT Calvin Gene Maguire, sir

As an American, I would like to thank you for your service and for your sacrifice made on behalf of our wonderful country. The youth of today could gain much by learning of heroes such as yourself, men and women whose courage and heart can never be questioned.

May God allow you to read this, and may He allow me to someday shake your hand when I get to Heaven to personally thank you. May he also allow my father to find you and shake your hand now to say thank you; for America, and for those who love you.

With respect, Sir

Curt Carter

Train Ride

I don’t remember the date, but I’ll never forget that day in the Fall of 1966 – the day we shared a train ride from Altoona to Pittsburgh, PA. You were drafted, I was enlisting. You didn’t want to go, I did. You were inducted, I was given a 4-F classification. I saw you twice more after that, both times at the weekly Saturday night dance at St. Mary’s Memorial Hall in Altoona: once after you had returned from boot camp, the next time when you were heading out for regular duty. Little would I know it would be the last time. Over the next few years I would wonder from time to time whatever happened to you. Then, and I don’t remember the year, I saw a memorial for you in the Altoona Mirror, our hometown newspaper. And something you said came back to me. It was something like: “I know I am not the college type. But when I get out I am going to use the GI bill to get a good trade and make something out of myself so nobody gets to use me again.” Since then, every chance it is appropriate to, I tell of the two boys sharing a train ride to Pittsburgh, PA.

Not forgotten

Calvin, Although we never met, I just want you to know you are not forgotten. You gave the ultimate sacrifice, your life for what you believed in. Sleep well my friend, and thank you for protecting the freedoms we have today.
