"Express"
I was a forward observer attached to the Fifth Mobile Strike Force, commanded by Captain Beckman. His call sign was "Express." As an artillery officer, most of my Vietnam combat experience was acquired under Express. General Westmoreland called Express's Fifth Mobile Strike Force the hottest field operation in all of Vietnam during June, 1969. We were extracted on July 4, 1969. I never saw Express again. I learned he later died while I was on R and R.
Express was one of many unsung heroes of the Vietnam War. The caches of weapons Express uncovered in III Corps delayed major offensives for many months, giving President Nixon hope that Vietnamization would work.
I haven't forgotten you, Express. I keep you in my Sunday prayers even after 31 years.
