My memories

We were resupplied late. It was not good. We had to move, Looney was the squad leader. We were forced to head across a make shift bridge that was part of the Ho Che Minh trail. We all knew better. With all the noise of the helicopter bringing resupplies we were marked. We headed out, Looney was second in my memory. I was right behind him, again as I remember. About ten of us made it across when all hell broke loose. When all was done, two of us were not hit. As the medic and came up from behind I remember hearing SGT Looney was a line one.
He had received a nice package from his family in the incoming mail. While the food his family sent was not wasted, those of use who survived still have the guilt of being survivors. Gary Owen

Remembering An American Hero

Dear SGT Robert Looney, sir

As an American, I would like to thank you for your service and for your sacrifice made on behalf of our wonderful country. The youth of today could gain much by learning of heroes such as yourself, men and women whose courage and heart can never be questioned.

May God allow you to read this, and may He allow me to someday shake your hand when I get to Heaven to personally thank you. May he also allow my father to find you and shake your hand now to say thank you; for America, and for those who love you.

With respect, and the best salute a civilian can muster for you, Sir

Curt Carter

I was there...

I was a few people away from Robert when the claymore mines went off. There were several explosions followed immediately by intense machine gun and small arms fire. I see four guys carrying Robert’s limp body. I called for Robert, and all four heads moved back and forth communicating no. Robert was dead. I still see him there...
